When we touch, taste or smell, the flesh of our bodies comes in direct contact with the physical substance of what ever it is that we are touching, tasting or smelling.

It can then be said that the richness [read: complexity] of the experience is proportional to the complexity of the subjects physical composition.

In easy words dammit!

What's more interesting on your tongue, pure water or warm cocoa?

Well, just how many elements are in pure water.
Two; Hydrogen and Oxygen.

And in the warm Cocoa?
A heck of a lot, but we don't want a chemistry lesson.

The bottom line is this: when we touch, taste or smell, we are having a one to one relationship with the substance, and thus, the very composition of the subject of our focus. If a distortion of the experience occurs, it takes place on our end.
